Security Cameras
Keep an eye on your home or business from every angle with the latest security cameras. Whether you’re interested in video doorbells or full security camera systems, decide if you need a wired or wireless setup and consider some of the features that surveillance cameras offer.
Wired and Wireless Security Cameras
When shopping for a home security camera, it’s important to figure out whether you want your device to be wired or wireless.
Wired: Each camera is connected to a recording unit, which in turn is connected to a router. Installation can be complex – especially if your home has already been built – so be sure to consult with a professional before taking on the job yourself. Wired home security cameras send data through a closed circuit, not over a signal. They’re also not susceptible to interference such as cellular and radio frequencies. If you have a large home or property that needs comprehensive coverage, wired systems are a better option because they can support more cameras.
Wireless:Wireless security cameras transmit data either through radio frequencies or over a Wi-Fi network. This eliminates the need for cables, allowing installation to be much simpler than wired security cameras. Wireless systems also make it easy to move and rearrange your cameras if necessary. Most wireless systems include Wi-Fi cameras – or IP cameras – that work with a smartphone app for remote control access, cloud storage and livestream footage. Be aware that wireless cameras may also be vulnerable to signal interference from nearby devices.
Other Considerations for Security Cameras
Video Storage: The number and type of cameras you have, along with how often you plan to record footage, all factor into the amount of storage you need. Depending on your system, you can store footage on a DVR/NVR or in the cloud. Cloud storage options usually come with a subscription fee.
Motion Detection: If you’re concerned about video storage, check to see if the camera offers motion detection. The camera will only record when it senses movement, saving you storage space and time browsing unneeded footage.
Zoom: Look for security cameras with optical zoom if you’re filming something from a distance. Optical zoom provides a much clearer and sharper image compared to digital zoom.
No matter if they’re for your home or small business, security cameras are one of the best ways to protect your family or employees, secure your property and give yourself peace of mind.
